Exposure Monitoring and Analytical Support for Law Enforcement Agencies
01Context
Agencies operate critical systems around the clock: computer-aided dispatch, records management, digital evidence storage, and connections to state and federal criminal justice networks. They must meet the FBI CJIS Security Policy while defending against the same ransomware and credential attacks that target every public entity, usually with a small IT staff shared with the municipality or county.
02How it is typically done
Security responsibilities sit with municipal IT or a single agency administrator. CJIS compliance is handled around the state audit cycle. Investigative analysis depends on in-house analysts and the tools the budget allows, with long queues for digital work.
03Where that breaks down
- Compliance is prepared for the audit rather than maintained between audits.
- Agency credentials and exposed services appear in breach data and internet scans before anyone internally notices.
- Shared municipal networks mean an incident elsewhere in local government can disrupt public safety systems.
- Analysts spend time collecting and normalizing data rather than analyzing it.
